Learn about this tool
Clean PDFs to remove active elements or embedded content selected before you share the document. These elements can include JavaScript, automated actions, or attachments. This process helps reduce the risk surface from unnecessary parts but does not mean the entire file is safe. The results depend on the types of elements that the tool can detect and support, while PDFs may contain complex or non-standard structures.
Sanitize does not understand the confidential content displayed on the page and does not replace redaction. Phone numbers, addresses, account numbers, or sensitive images will still appear if you do not review and handle them separately. After cleaning, open the resulting file in a suitable environment and check the necessary links, forms, multimedia content, and attachments. Removing components may change the document's available features.
Remove unnecessary actions and embedded content before sending the PDF to the workgroup.
Reduce unnecessary interactive components in long-term storage copies or read-only copies.
Remove attachments, active code, or multimedia features not intended for the end recipient.

Frequently asked questions
No. Sanitize processes supported active components or embedded components, but does not evaluate the meaning of the text and images being displayed. Account numbers on the page remain. You need to review the content, use redaction to remove sensitive areas, and then check the exported version.
It is possible if the attachments belong to the group of components chosen to be removed. The release is therefore more streamlined, but the supporting documents that the recipient needs may also be deleted. Keep the original, identify mandatory attachments, and check the list and functionality of the resulting version before sending.
Not recommended. Cleaning only removes the types of elements that the tool can support and recognize. Malformed files, unusual structures, or techniques not yet detected may still exist. This is a risk-reduction layer that should be combined with an updated reader, security scanning operations, and an appropriate file acceptance policy.
Access expires after one hour and cleanup runs every five minutes. Download any results you need before they expire.
