Learn about this tool
Setting a PDF password allows you to restrict who can open the document when sending contracts, reports, or records to a specific group. The tool encrypts the file with the password you choose. Recipients must enter the correct password to view the content. This measure only controls access and does not remove sensitive information from the pages or replace the organization's document management procedures.
Choose a long, hard-to-guess password and send it to the recipient through a channel different from the file transfer channel. After processing, open the locked PDF with a common reader to check the password and how the pages are displayed. For data that needs to be permanently removed, use the appropriate redaction tool beforehand. Setting a password alone does not constitute redaction.
Lock the PDF before sending it to customers, candidates, or designated partners.
Set a password requirement for financial reports or operational reports transferred between teams.
Further control access rights to documents stored in shared folders or on mobile devices.

Frequently asked questions
No. The password only controls opening the file or certain usage permissions. The ID number remains in the PDF when someone with the password opens the document. To remove this data, you need to use redaction, apply a permanent masking area, and then check the exported file to confirm that the underlying content is no longer retrievable.
The PDF may have a file-opening password along with specific settings for printing, copying, or editing rights. Even if the recipient enters the correct password, the reader may still enforce the printing restrictions set. The degree of enforcement depends on the PDF reader software, so these permission limits cannot be considered an absolute anti-copy mechanism.
You shouldn't. If the password is in the same message or email thread as the file, anyone who accesses the mailbox will have both. Verify the recipient and then send the password through another channel suitable for your process, such as a call or an organization-approved messaging app.
Access expires after one hour and cleanup runs every five minutes. Download any results you need before they expire.
