Learn about this tool
PDF redaction helps you find and remove sensitive content before sending documents to others. You can search for names, case numbers, or phrases that need to be processed in the text, review each result, and then apply redaction. A proper process must remove the underlying content. If you only place a black rectangle on top, the text underneath can still be copied or recovered.
The search feature only works with the portion of text that the PDF can recognize. It may miss text in scanned images, text drawn as outlines, OCR errors, or other writing styles. You should review each page at an appropriate zoom level, including headers, footnotes, and hidden layers. Then, try searching or copying content from the output. Redaction does not automatically decide for you which information to keep or disclose.
Remove identification numbers, addresses, or contact information not intended for the recipient.
Create a disclosure version containing only the necessary content from reports, minutes, or supporting records.
Delete internal prices, customer codes, or terms outside the sharing scope.

Frequently asked questions
Scanned pages are usually pixel images and do not have a text layer for searching. The search feature will not find phone numbers if OCR has not been run or if digits and spaces were misrecognized. Review each page, consider using OCR to help detect and mark image areas needing redaction, then verify the output copy.
Not necessarily. A black rectangle may only cover the visible part, while the original text can still be selected, copied, or extracted. Proper redaction must remove the underlying content from the PDF. Then, save it as a new file and try searching, copying, and zooming the processed area.
Not necessarily. The name may be abbreviated, written without accents, broken across lines, in an image, or misrecognized by OCR. The find-all command will miss those cases. Review each result to avoid incorrect redactions, look for related forms, and manually check the entire page before publishing.
